Hospital Bag Must-Haves for Real-Life Mamas

From Real-Life Mama, Kristin Inkley, LMSW

You’re nearing the endzone of pregnancy and it’s starting to get real!

The reality of a new human being in your life is setting in,and a mixed bag of emotions is washing over you: pure excitement to meet your little one, maybe some fear about the experience of new parenthood and most likely some exhaustion and frustration about being ready to have your body back.

Perhaps you’re the type A who is always extra prepared and you’ve already done all the things. Or maybe you’re more the type who hasn’t opened a single baby shower present yet and baby is due… yesterday.

No matter which category you fall into, having a good idea of what you should bring to the hospital will save you some pain when the time comes.

Here are some things recommended to new parents to pack beforehand:

o   Items for baby: welcoming and going home outfit, pacifiers, swaddles—the hospital usually provides diapers and other baby essentials

o   If planning to breastfeed, you may want to bring your pump supplies/nursing pillow, especially if you are expecting a C-section and will be in the hospital for a longer period

o   Nursing bras or loose tank tops

o   Pillows/blankets from home (non-birthing partner AND mama may be more comfortable this way)

o   Extra-long charging cables (chairs and hospital bed may be far away from outlets)

o   Change of comfortable clothes and toiletries for mom and non-birthing partner (this includes comfy PJs, layers because hospitals are inconsistent with their temps)

o   Flip-flops to wear in hospital shower

o   A few snacks and/or quarters for the vending machine

o   If baby has older siblings, consider bringing a gift “from baby” to give their older sister or brother when they come to meet baby

o   Slip on shoes or grippy socks

o   Any items essential in assisting with your birthing plan (i.e. essential oils, fan or water spray, something to play music)

o   Car seat

o   ID and insurance information

o   Anything you may want for entertainment, especially if you are getting an epidural early on (laptop, books, etc.)
